Val-des-Marais is the southernmost commune of the Côte des Blancs, with a small flat-land vineyard area entirely planted to Chardonnay, on terrain that lies south of the actual hill. Historically the village had a split classification, with Premier Cru status for white grapes and a lower Autre Cru rating for blacks, retained as a uniform Premier Cru after the Échelle was abolished in 2010.
